District Information

1) ROTARY100DOWNUNDER:  Rotary “Down Under” will mark an epic milestone in April 2021, when districts, clubs and Rotarians from across our regions celebrate 100 years of doing good in the community, both at home and abroad.

Rotarians from across Australia and New Zealand will celebrate 100 years of doing good in the community, both at home and abroad. Many centenary projects are already underway. The Rotary Down Under magazine is calling on all Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Island Rotarians to add their own local flavour to these joint celebrations. How will your club commemorate our past 100 years of achievement and kick-off a bright new era for Rotary into the future?

2)  Australian Aid: Friendship Grants are bringing local Australian community organisations into the Australian aid program by providing funding for Rotary clubs to expand or enhance their international development activities in our region.  The three-year Australian Aid: Friendship Grants program will bring some of the best of these organisations into the Australian aid program by providing grants of $30,000 to $60,000, allowing them to expand or enhance their existing international development activities. Round 2 of the Friendship Grants is now open, and will close at 1.00pm (AEST) on 10 September 2019. For more information see

3) The Rotary Club of Sydney Inner West invites Rotarians and friends to the Spring into Spring Dinner Dance at Balmain Bowling Club, 156 Darling St Balmain on Saturday, September 21st at 6.30pm.$75.pp  Bookings:  https://www.trybooking.com/BEIDI (See attachment for details)

4)   Mark Anderson at the Presidents Meeting on 26th July gave details of the Polio Train Ride which starts in Cronulla at 4.33AM and finishes at Tallawong at 10.52PM on Thursday, 24th October 2019. The correct timetable is attached (Plan C) so that no will miss joining Rotarians on the train. List the Save the Date in the club's diary to join Rotarians and friends and ensure another very successful community project. (See attachment for details).

5) DGN Jeremy Wright invites all Rotarians and friends to participate in Red Nose Day on Friday 9th August 2019. The Sudden Infant Death Research Foundation Inc. now known as Red Nose, was founded by a group of parents in 1977 following the deaths of their infants to SIDS. Among these families was DGN Jeremy Wright who was instrumental in starting the first Red Nose Day in 1988. For more information see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudden_infant_death_syndrome
Ian Scott, from the Rotary Club of Mornington in Victoria, was so moved by the impact of SIDS on families that he resolved to set up a fund to support research on this and other family health problems. This resulted in the establishment of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (later called ARH). The Fund offered its first research grants in 1985. The Fund initially supported research on sudden infant death syndrome, including a project which showed that prone sleeping position of the infant was a major risk factor. An information campaign following this research led to a rapid fall in the deaths from SIDS in Australia.

6) At Conference 2020, to be held in Wollongong from 20th to 22nd March 2020, two Vocational Excellence Awards will be presented to members of our community to honour their outstanding contribution in their vocational field in Australia. We want to acknowledge their enthusiasm and give recognition to these exceptional achievers. We want to demonstrate to others, particularly our young people, the need to strive for vocational excellence for the benefit of all. The nominee must work or reside in District 9675. If you think you know of someone who fits these criteria please fill out the nomination form attached. Applications close on 31st October.

7) The Rotary Club of Sylvania, which was chartered on the 7th February 1991 with 27 members, was sadly farewelled, on Wednesday, 7th August 2019. The evening was a celebration of their memorable years with over 70 people attending, including three of their charter members who still remained as members. The club was originally sponsored by the Caringbah Rotary Club but unfortunately they were unable to continue, and they handed in their charter on 30th June 2019. Many of the local Rotary Clubs attended the evening with many Rotarians sharing memories of the club's achievements. President Donna Wallace and Secretary Wendy Davis were both presented with a PHF in recognition of the great service they gave to their club and to their community. Most of the club members have found homes in other local Rotary Clubs and will continue with their Service above Self.

8) The Rotary Fitness website has been reborn and includes a great story on City2Surf which will be held this coming Sunday, 11th August. See photos of the Legends who have participated in every City2Surf since it started almost 50 years ago. They all wear bright yellow Australian Rotary Health shirts and fundraise for ARH. Read about one of these Legends -  our very own Keith Henning and DG Dianne is also mentioned. Rotarians can click on the links and donate to ARH on either Keith or Dianne’s fundraising page.  The calendar on the website allows clubs to list their health and sports-related fundraising events. There are other stories to read such as adventures in Nepal, running in Hamburg and the Rotary Henley on Todd Regatta. Please check the website: https://activerotarians.org/ for details.

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
