8) On the 31st January we received the sad news that two polio workers were killed in Pakistan close to the Afghanistan border. RI Past Vice President Mike McGovern (Chair, International PolioPlus Committee) will lead a delegation of senior Rotary leaders to meet with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and the chief of the Pakistani army in Islamabad. They will emphasise the need for full cooperation and support to ensure that the community based vaccinators are safe, and also underline the importance of ongoing vaccinations in the fight to end Polio. The new oral polio vaccine which has been under development for ten years, is ready to go. They are awaiting final approval but manufacturing is already underway with 100 million doses expected to be ready on 1st July and a further 100 million by the end of the year. The indications from testing the vaccine is that it will eliminate the incidences of vaccine derived cases that have become more prevalent in the last 12 months. Bill Gates has just announced that the Gates Foundation will continue matching donations to Rotary's PolioPlus program 2-1, up to US$50 million for the next three years.
9) A request has been received from David Russell who coordinates the placement in NSW of recently graduated US teachers. There is a 22 year old male who will attend Newtown School of Performing Arts for 8 weeks commencing 27 April. The school usually arranges home hosting, but that is not possible this time. Would this interest one of our Rotary Clubs? The teacher expects to pay $200/week for board. It could be seen as a Youth/International project. Please contact David joanda1077@gmail.com
10) Another request has been received from Martin Horsted a member of Hemel Hempstead Rotary Club, District 1260 U.K. Martin is seeking a New Generations Service Exchange (NGSE) for 5-8 weeks sometime during the period April-June this year for his daughter, Emma who is almost 19 years old and is currently undertaking a Gap-Year before taking up a place to study Psychology at Southampton University in October. Due to the current challenges in Australia, Emma has a desire to see if she can help in some way, whether it be with animals, the environment or people. Martin was a team member in a Group Study Exchange (GSE) to District (9750 as it was then) in 1988.
