Let's start talking men's mental health

It’s not always easy to talk about mental health (especially with your mates) but what can feel like an uncomfortable conversation could be the one that saves a life.

Suicide is the leading cause of death in men under 44 years and with men 3 times more likely to suicide than women, we think it’s time we start talking men’s mental health in Macarthur.

Join us for our Men's Long Lunch on Friday 18th October to open up the conversation about men's mental health. We'll hear personal accounts from men that have struggled and survived mental illness and now support others to succeed.

District Information

1. This is a reminder that for the upcoming Annual General Meeting on 15th November, nominations for the District Governor Nominating Sub-Committee and also the Club Representative for Region 2 on the Committee of the Association close on the 18th October. Region 2 includes Rotary Clubs from the Sydney North West Group, Sydney South West Group and the Macarthur Group. This information was distributed to Presidents, Secretaries and Assistant Governors on the 4th October. If you would like to nominate someone please send an email to District Governor Dianne at districtgovernor@rotarydistrict9675.org

2. Charlestown Rotary Club has produced an End Polio promotional video for you to use to promote World Polio Day on 24th October 2019. Follow the link:   https://youtu.be/V7pOmHX8tI8

If your club is going to take part in the Polio Train Ride on 24th October by presenting a cheque at a train station please let Mark Anderson know. Mark needs this information so that if a connection is missed or there is a delay, the club can be contacted to let you know.

Please give Mark your

  • Club name
  • Contact name and phone number
  • Station  and time (some stations are passed through a number of times)
  • Amount to donate (so Mark can get some sort of indication towards the tally)

The train timetable is attached as well as the template for the “cheque” presentation.

Mark is also requesting if there is a club in the Macarthur area who would be able to organise a dinner to be sponsored and delivered to Macarthur Station at 7:47PM on the day. Breakfast and lunch are both being sponsored and the deliveries organised, but dinner is still a gap. At best estimate there will 6 Rotarians who are completing the full journey.

Please wear the red End Polio Now shirt if possible. RDU now have stock. Mark has the publicity organised.

Please contact Mark Anderson at mark.anderson@rotary.org

3. Community groups across NSW are being challenged to brush up their creative skills for this year’s Graffiti Removal Day by creating murals. Preventing graffiti is the focus for this year’s event on Sunday, 27 October. Since the event started in 2012, volunteers have removed more than 141,000sqm of graffiti, saving the community $10.4 million. This year, as well as removing graffiti we want to see ugly tags with no artistic merit covered by colourful murals to help stop graffiti from occurring in the first place. To help inspire people there is a competition to find the best mural in the state with a $1000 first prize. Several schools in the Georges River area have already kicked off the competition with over 500 students combining to create a community mural at Carss Park. They are also challenging other groups to enter the competition. Graffiti Removal Day ambassador and football legend Mark Geyer OAM congratulated the students and threw his support behind the event. Up to 3000 volunteers from various groups including Rotary, Scouts NSW, Girl Guides NSW&ACT, Air Force Cadets, PCYC, NSW Police, Lions, church groups, high schools and 80 councils are expected to remove graffiti from over 600 sites across NSW on Sunday 27th October. All material and equipment required for Graffiti Removal Day is supplied to volunteers for free by sponsors Dulux, NSW Government, Australian Rail Track Corporation and Southern Cleaning Supplies. See attachment for details.

4. Conference 2020, to be held in Wollongong from 20th to 22nd March 2020. Two Vocational Excellence Awards will be presented to members of our community to honour their outstanding contribution in their vocational field in Australia. We want to acknowledge their enthusiasm and give recognition to these exceptional achievers. We want to demonstrate to others, particularly our young people, the need to strive for vocational excellence for the benefit of all. The nominee must work or reside in District 9675. If you think you know of someone who fits these criteria please fill out the nomination form attached. Applications close on 31st October. See attachment for details.

5. The Rotary Foundation Dinner will be held on Monday 11th November at The Waterview Function Centre, Bicentennial Drive, Sydney Olympic Park at 6.30pm for 7.00pm start. The speaker this year is Past RI President Ravi Ravindran. Ravi is an inspirational speaker who will inform and entertain with his plans for his role as incoming Foundation Chair. Cost is $75.00 per head or $700 for a table of 10. A two course meal will be served with drinks at bar prices. Book at http://bit.ly/foundationdinner2019. See district website for more details at https://rotarydistrict9675.org

6PDG Keith Roffey advises that the 2019 Resolutions for the Council on Resolutions have been published and can be downloaded from  https://my.rotary.org/en/cor/vote   The Council on Resolutions meets online every year to vote on resolutions, proposed by clubs, districts, and the RI Board. Ideally, a resolution should affect the Rotary world, so browse the website and keep informed. Rotarians have until the 28th October to make comment or note preferences by contacting Keith m: 0419 046 688 or e: keithroffey@bigpond.com (See attachment for more information).

7. Rae-Anne Medforth D9675 Membership Chair is inviting you  to read the Rotary on the Move Newsletter for October 2019 which includes some really interesting membership stories and up-to-date information about club extension and membership experiences. It is a very valuable resource for your club and you can also add your success stories to share in your Rotary community.  All past editions are also available on the website with multiple resources to assist clubs and Rotarians. 8. The Jalopy Derby will be run from the 2nd to 9th May 2020. It will be a 7 night, 8 day car rally across rural Australia providing participants with an opportunity to experience the amazing outback, build friendships, and foster comradeship while helping others. This event will take you to some of the outback’s most iconic landmarks and give you a fascinating insight into rural areas and the challenges that people who live there face. This Jalopy Derby is in support of Rural Aid to raise as much money as possible for the drought affected communities that are doing it tough. The participants will be part of a Farm Army, helping farmers with their farm projects. Each night the rally is hosted by a farming community complete with entertainment from local musical talent. The route is between Sydney and Proserpine, taking in Dubbo, Lightning Ridge, Windorah and Longreach. For more information please go to   https://jalopjyderby.com.au/

9. In today’s technology-driven world, more members are turning to Rotary.org, Rotary’s social media accounts, and other online Rotary channels to get the information they need. Fewer and fewer members are using Rotary Shop to order printed materials or to purchase Rotary branded merchandise. Because of members’ changing needs, the Rotary Shop will cease operating in April. The most popular publications will be available digitally on various Rotary websites. Some publications will even be offered as print-ready files that you can take to a printer to produce locally. Rotary merchandise can be purchased directly from approved licensed vendors.
More information will be available in the coming months. If you have any questions, please contact rotarysupportcenter@rotary.org.
